Since classes have started, I haven't been able to contribute as much time to doing art. However, I found some time to wrap up my projects and finish my Recreating History portfolio.
The first piece that I worked on was a recreation of The Son of Man by René Magritte. In this piece, I wanted to change the simplistic, calm piece into something erratic and loud. I worked with watercolor, as well as black and white pen to outline and define the piece. Instead of a realistic surrealism, I wanted to capture something that represented that of a comic-book -- bold lines, exaggerated shading, yet still simplistic. I also wanted to make the vibe be something that was darker than the original, just to switch things up. I was restricted by the dimensions of the board I was using, so I wasn't able to perfectly match the dimensions of the original.
The side by side comparison of my work and Magritte's
I like how this piece came out, as it has its similarities to the original, but could also be a stand alone piece.
The next and final piece that I worked on is a recreation of Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer. I struggled to come up with a final piece to cap off this portfolio, so I looked to the rest of my portfolio for inspiration. One of the pieces I had really enjoyed working on was my Girl with Hair Ribbon recreation, so I wanted to capture a similar vibe with this piece.
Although the original is soft and gentle on the eyes, I wanted to challenge myself and turn it into a bright, colorful, comic-book style piece such as Girl with Hair Ribbon and the piece I did above.
The side by side comparison of my work and Vermeer's, as well as some progress pictures
I absolutely love how this piece came out. I love the Ben-Day dots mixed with the stark contrast of the subject and the background. I used primarily Sharpie, as well as Crayola markers for the Ben-Day dots.
