June 15, 2022: Comet Analysis

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

The second portion of my internship has absolutely flown by!

I have been working on two main projects: a COMET analysis and the Intern Innovation Challenge. Next week, I drive to Battle Creek, Michigan where Kellogg's is headquartered to present my projects to an audience, as well as connect with people in person!

COMET Analysis:

Using Tableau, I created two presentations that benchmarked profit and documented areas of improvement for Kellogg’s NGT. Specifically, I dove into the Bars and Cereal categories to:

  • Learn and utilize Tableau (COMET) and its functions to gain insights on areas of improvement.

  • Benchmark NGT Customers by profit (GM%NSV).

  • Explore Customer P&Ls, Performance Matrices, and Gross to Net Details to uncover efficiencies and/or potential improvements.

The objective of this project was to engage with Customer Teams on finding plan efficiencies & driving profit improvement.

Because most of this project dealt with confidential data, I am only able to share what my method, concerns, and solutions were. The method consisted of drilling down on underperforming sections of data to find these concerns. I started from a very high level with the data, first sorting it by Kellogg's National Grocery Team (NGT) by their Categories (Bars, Cereal, etc.) and Customer Grouping (Kroger, Ahold, etc.). After comparing each Customer Grouping's GM% to the Total NGT GM%, I drilled down to the next segment of data. For example, the data showed that Ahold USA/Delhaize was underperforming. I then took a look at Ahold USA/Delhaize's banners, or grouping of each grocery chain within the Customer Grouping. After finding which banner was underperforming, I would again drill down, now to the brand, to analyze which brand is underperforming.

With this brand, I would analyze the Customer P&L as well as the Gross to Net details to gain insight on why this brand might be underperforming.

Overall, some concerns and opportunities that I had found were:

With this information, we were able to create potential solutions for Kellogg's Customer Teams:

This project allowed me to gain exposure and an understanding of Tableau, sorting through data, and learning how to convey information concisely to different audiences. If I were to keep digging into the data, I would find it interesting to see how Kellogg's NGT compares to different channels, such as Club.

This project allowed me the opportunity to expand my knowledge of the CPG industry and dig into Kellogg's specific data. I love learning by experience, which makes this opportunity an amazing learning experience for me!

I am looking forward to my trip to headquarters next week and hopefully have a blast with meeting new people and presenting my projects.
